L01
Architectural task light
A task light reduced to a single line: a 415 mm aluminum head, one leaning support, and a friction hinge calculated to hold any angle through 120° of roll.

One line.
One joint.
A task light is a simple request: put a clean, even line of light exactly where the work is, then get out of the way. L01 answers it with the least object it can: a 415 mm aluminum head, a single slender support, and one joint.
Everything that is not form has been moved out of sight. The weight lives in the base, the friction mechanism lives in the hinge, and the driver and controls live under the plate. What stays on the desk is a line, a post and a plate.
01/System
Two extrusions.
One axis.
The luminaire is two aluminum extrusions meeting at a single joint. A 380 mm support leans 5° back from the base, and a 415 mm head runs across the desk to an overall length of 622.5 mm. The head rolls about its own centre line, so the hinge axis and the line of light are one and the same.
- 622.5 mmOverall length
- 412.4 mmOverall height
- 5°Support lean
- ±60°Roll range, hard stops

| Envelope, L × W × H | 622.5 × 135.1 × 412.4 mm |
|---|---|
| Hinge axis height | 398.4 mm |
| Head length | 420 mm overall, 415 mm extrusion |
| Support length | 380 mm, centre line |
| Base width | 180 mm |
| Mass, CAD estimate | 2,186 g |
| Centre of gravity | 37, 9, 73 mm |
| Bill of materials | 34 items |
02/Hinge

No bearing. No clutch.
The head rolls on a D22 journal, held by a stack of friction washers under a disc spring. Tightening one cap sets the torque. The calculated holding torque is about 80 times the gravity torque at full roll, so the head stays where it is put.
| Parameter | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Roll range | ±60° | Hard stops: a keyed stop-washer lug in a sector pocket in the hub, checked in CAD |
| Journal fit | D22 H7 / g6 | 0.007 to 0.041 mm running clearance |
| Shaft | D8, stainless 1.4305 | Fixed, double-D. It carries the preload; it is not a bearing |
| Friction faces | POM-C washers | Seated in a 0.6 mm recess, leaving a 0.4 mm gap |
| Preload | 154 N | Disc spring, set by an M6 × 0.75 cap with a 2.5 mm hex |
| Holding torque | 0.28 to 0.57 N·m | Target 0.35, calculated for friction μ 0.10 to 0.20 |
| Gravity roll torque | 4.4 mN·m | At ±60°, centre of gravity 2.0 mm below the axis |
| Journal finish | Hard anodise, 25 µm | Housing and cap: clear anodise |
Calculated values. Holding torque is to be verified on prototypes.
03/Light

A line, not a bulb.
The LED module sits recessed in the extrusion behind an opal diffuser. The diffuser snaps in past 0.6 mm ribs and flexes out again, so it is removable without tools or adhesive. An 8 mm thermal spine carries heat from the LED board into the housing walls.
Finish is part of
the heat sink.
At 8 W electrical, the calculated housing rise is 16.0 K with clear anodising and 25.0 K bare, about a third lower. The finish is a thermal decision as well as a visual one.
| Electrical, W | Heat, W | Rise, clear, K | Housing, clear, °C | Rise, bare, K | Housing, bare, °C |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 5.2 | 16.0 | 41.0 | 25.0 | 50.0 |
| 10 | 6.5 | 19.4 | 44.4 | 29.9 | 54.9 |
| 12 | 7.8 | 22.7 | 47.7 | 34.7 | 59.7 |
Clear = clear anodised, bare = bare satin aluminium. Housing temperature at 25 \u00B0C ambient. Hand calculation only: natural convection and radiation. No thermal test or simulation has been performed.
04/Base
Weight,
where it helps.
The base is the counterweight. A 10.5 mm steel plate, 1,174 g by CAD and more than half of the estimated 2,186 g, is laser-cut with through-features only and clamped under a steel cover with four countersunk screws. Silicone feet define the tipping lines. The support seats in a pocket machined at 5° and is retained by two M3 screws, reachable only with the cover off.

05/Documentation
From object
to specification.
Six A3 sheets in first-angle projection, toleranced to ISO 2768-mK: general assembly, base, support extrusion, friction hinge, light head, and an exploded assembly with its bill of materials. Three are shown here.
Rev B is an EVT-00 preliminary design. It has not been validated or released for manufacture. The driver and encoder are modelled as envelopes, and the thermal figures are hand calculations.
